It is no surprise that a lot of drugs are transported along I-40. The interstate one of the major east-west superhighways in the country. You hear about a lot of traffic stops outside of town with personal vehicle loaded down with drugs. However, this is one of the first times in a long time I have heard it happening on a bus that was coming into Amarillo.

On Friday, July 24, a drug sniffing K9 from the Amarillo Police Department alerted on something suspicious within a Greyhound Bus that arrived in town. The K9 and APD officer were doing their normal rounds at the Greyhound Service Station downtown. The K9 alerted officers to a suitcase on the bus. Inside that bag, were two vacuum-sealed packages of cocaine hidden in the lining of the suitcase. The amount of cocaine found is estimated at $90,000.

A name tag on the bag was for Gabriel Vasquez. Undercover DEA officers arrived to assist Amarillo Police and travel from the service station to the passenger terminal. As passengers were coming off the bus, they presented their boarding passes. Vasquez presented his pass and was immediately arrested by officers.

In an interview with officials, Vasquez told them he was being paid $2,000 to transport illegal drugs from Tuscon, Arizona to Des Moines, Iowa. He was booked in the Randall County Jail on a federal hold. He is charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
