In 2009, Elton John fell in love with HIV-positive Ukrainian orphan Lev. The Guardian reported that family minister Yuriy Pavlenko refused John the privilege of adopting the child based on the latter's marital status and age.

Fast forwarding to Dec. 25, 2010, there is news that Sir Elton and civil partner David Furnish have become the proud papas of a seven-pound, 15-ounce baby boy. Born to a surrogate mother, Us Magazine reveals that the child's full name will be Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John.

Older Parents Face Uphill Challenges

Even as the couple is able to afford a legion of nannies, care providers and others to take the edge off a newborn's high demands, there are ethical considerations about becoming a parent at advancing years. With Furnish being 48 and John having celebrated his 63rd birthday, they fall into the "older parents" category.
