There aren't many times I find myself at an absolute loss for words. I have no quips. I have nothing outlandish to say to soften the blow. Today it was announced that Steve Nicholson, founder of Nick's Fight Club, has passed away.

The Steve Nicholson I knew was an amazing man, full of love and compassion for everyone he met. When I crossed paths with Steve, I was in pretty sorry shape.

He looked past the person I thought I was, and saw potential. He worked with me, and helped me see that potential. Steve helped me believe in myself at a time when that was the hardest thing to do.

We talked a lot about Oklahoma in between rounds. We also talked a lot about our families, raising kids, who our favorite boxers were, who our picks were in upcoming fights...he felt more like a friend than a trainer.

The thing I hope everyone got to experience with Steve was the way he made you feel like you were bigger than the things going on in your life; that you were tougher than those things you wished you could change. Somehow, he was able to get you to do what you thought was impossible.

I'll never forget the first time he called me "No Joke" Charlie. It was one of the biggest complements I have ever received. Like I said, he saw those things about you that you couldn't.

I spent almost an entire year meeting with Steve for training every week. I fell ill that December, and when I had finally recovered, I kept telling myself that I would get back in the gym. Unfortunately, I never did. I regret it.

If I could, I would say thank you to Steve for believing in a six foot, 119lb Okie at the end of his rope. I'll always be grateful for the time I got to spend in the ring with him, and sad that I didn't push past my hectic work schedule and everything else going on in life to do a few more rounds.

Nick's Fight Club is asking that everyone wear their NFC t-shirt on Saturday, July 11 to honor Steve and his impact on our community.

I'll be wearing mine proudly.

Go rest high on that mountain, sir.
